This has just hit mainstream media outlets pretty heavy:

What do you know about this situation? What does it say about our country, our national mentality, ourselves that we could not know about this? That we have not done anything about it?

It just goes to show you how much our liberal media controls what we think and care about in the US. You cannot blame the people of the US if they don't hear about it. We should push President Bush to liberate Aung San Suu Kyi and her country.
Whoever anonymous is...
I don't think we can so easily blame the media for our ignorance. Surely they could do a better job at reporting a broader scope of stories...I've contended this on a regular basis. But two things:
1) The media ultimately panders to the desires of the people. Maybe it's a chicken or egg question...do we follow the media's lead or does the media follow our lead. But, ultimately, we watch and click and follow stories that don't matter. And they give us more of those stories because it makes good business sense. We can't complain that Paris Hilton is all that's being covered when her stories are the ones that are in the "most read" section.
2) In the digital age when we literally have the world at our (web savvy) fingertips, we could be finding out more about the rest of the world, but tend to stay in our comfortable, suburbanite shells, unwilling to put forth the minimal amount of extra effort it would take to find stories that matter. We simply can't blame it all on the media when we have google.
Again...the media doesn't get a free pass on all of this, but the only thing that we can surely change is ourself, and what we choose to learn, seek out, and spread.
